Spring Break Trip

Now that the girls are in school and have scheduled spring breaks, we've decided to make a tradition to go on a little trip each year during spring break.  Most likely it will just be an overnight trip to somewhere nearby, as our budget doesn't really allow for big trips at this point.  Last year we went to St. Louis and had so much fun!   This year we went to the Bloomington/Normal area.

It only takes a a bit more than an hour to drive there from our house, but to make the trip more fun, we decided to take the Amtrak train.  The train station is in a little downtown area, with a Marriott and a children's museum right across the street along with several fun restaurants.  We took the train, spent the night at the Marriott, visited a couple of restaurants, and then spent Day 2 at the children's museum.  It was a fun little trip!

The only downfall to riding the train is dealing with train delays.  Our departing train was 2.5 hours late!  Fortunately we found this out before we left for the station, so we just spent more time at home. We didn't really have plans for our first day, so it wasn't that big of a deal.  But it was a little annoying, especially since we could have just got in our car and driven there in about an hour's time!

The girls were SO excited about the train though.  It was worth the wait to take them on it.

Isla was my seat partner.  She was adorably excited and talked NONSTOP the entire ride.  It was so much fun to sit by her.  She also got a hold of my camera and took some pictures.  She took this picture of me.

And a lot of selfies!  She is possibly starting to outgrow her camera shy phase.  Though it may start again tomorrow, so I say that very carefully.

We were able to check into the hotel early.  After grabbing a quick lunch, we headed straight to the hotel pool.  The pool was totally empty at 3:00 on a Monday afternoon, so we had it all to ourselves.  This is probably the part of the trip that the girls were most excited about, even more than the train!

We rested in our room for a little bit then headed to dinner.  We went to a restaurant called Medici.  It was a cool looking place, and the food was fairly good.  But it was slow service, and a little too long of a meal for the girls.  While waiting for our food, Isla asked me if I would take a picture of her and the picture she was coloring.  Um...of course!  It is possible this is the first time Isla has EVER asked me to take a picture of her!

Another good one from our newly discovered Little Miss Photogenic.

Ice cream sundae for dessert!

Back at the hotel, we snuggled up and introduced the girls to Full House for the first time.

Then it was bedtime.  The girls were excited that they got to share a bed.  When I told them, Audrey said, "Yay!  Then we can hug each other before we go to sleep."  Then Isla chimed in with, "And we can hold hands!"  Sometimes they are just so sweet.

The next day it was off to the museum!  The girls were so excited when they first got there.  They wanted to see everything and play with nothing.  We flew through all three floors of the museum, stopped to take a break for lunch, and then came back for a couple more hours.  After lunch, the crowds were lower and the girls attention span was longer.  They spent a lot more time playing at each place, and when it was time to go, they wanted to stay longer.

Then it was time to take the train back home.  Fortunately our returning train was on time!  This was  a fun little trip; I'm glad we decided to do it!
