August 13: Towel Buddies

Both girls like to wear their towels on their heads after bath time.

They also like to watch a show on TV after bath time.

And they like to scoot around on their bottoms after bath time.  (Well, Isla scoots and then Audrey always wants to copy her.  She is in a phase right now where she wants to do everything that Isla does).

August 12: The State Fair

It's August, which means it is time for the state fair!  We have a tradition of going to the fair with our friends Steve, Amy and Cael.  So that's what we did yesterday on a gorgeous Saturday afternoon/evening.
Let me start by saying that the fair is expensive!  We were there for four hours and spent $60...yikes!  Here is what we got for our $60:

Admission for Daniel and I (Kids 5 and under are free)
5 kiddie rides for Audrey
1 bag of mini donuts for the four of us to share
1 Sprite
1 Coke
2 cheeseburgers (I brought sandwiches and a banana for the girls, and we brought our own water)
1 order of fries for the four of us to share
1 small cup of Dippin Dots for the four of us to share
We could have spent less on food, and it would have been a cheaper afternoon.  We also could have easily spent a LOT more money on food and rides and all the random stuff (i.e. junk) for sale.

This was the first year for Audrey to ride some fair rides.  She only got to ride five; see above for my thoughts on how expensive the state fair is!  =)  But five was really the perfect number of rides for her.  She went on the tamest rides that the fair offers, but she went on them by herself, which was impressive to me.  And she had a huge smile on her face the whole time.

Poor Isla, she needs to learn how to walk so she can get out of the stroller and start having fun with the big kids!  She is pretty content to hang out in the stroller and eat goldfish and watch everyone else though. And we did get her out often...we didn't make her stay in the stroller the whole time.  Here she is getting a close up look at some goats.
Audrey and Cael spontaneously started walking and holding hands (actually, it was Audrey who grabbed Cael's hand) while walking from ride to ride.  SO cute!!
Silly sisters!!  They love to play together in the stroller.
Even though I complain about it being expensive,  I'm pretty sure we will continue this tradition.  It is a fun time with friends...just look at all the memories that were created!!

August 11: Beauty and the Beast

Last night, Audrey and I went to see Beauty and the Beast at the Muni.  We have been talking about going to see it since we found out about it in December, so there was a LOT of build up to this night!  We also have been listening to the Beauty and the Beast Broadway musical soundtrack in the car constantly since December (by Audrey's choice not ours!).  So Audrey knows all the words to all the songs and much of the dialogue as well.  We knew she would be really excited to see the show live in person.

The weather was so perfect.  Temps were in the 60s, so we needed jackets and even a blanket.  It was gorgeous!

Audrey loved the show, and she stayed awake through all of it.  The show started at 8:30, which is past her bedtime.  The show didn't end until after 11, and we didn't get home until almost midnight.  She even stayed awake (barely) on the 15 minute drive home.  This was by far the latest she has ever stayed up in her life!  (Yet, she was still awake and ready to go at 6:45 am this morning!!)

Some people from church were also at the show, and they were kind enough to buy a light up rose and bring it over for Audrey.  She was super excited about the rose.  At the end of the show, they told everyone to turn on their roses to help the Beast turn back into a prince.  Audrey is convinced that the Beast would not have turned into a prince without the help of her rose.

Audrey did some singing and dancing and dialogue quoting through parts of the show, but she kept it until control and wasn't too obnoxious to the people around us!  She also wanted to tell me what was going to happen next at the end of every scene.  There were over 1700 people in attendance and tons of little kids...so I'm sure she wasn't the only one talking and singing through the show.

After the show, Audrey wanted to meet Belle and get her picture with Belle.  She has been talking about it for weeks.  I knew that it would be possible to do this, as the characters almost always come out in costume after these shows to greet guests.  But I also knew that Belle would be extremely popular with the huge crowd in attendance, and I wasn't feeling up to waiting in a long line at 11:30 pm!

I made an educated guess about where I thought Belle would come out to greet the crowd, and I guessed exactly right.  We were standing right in front of Belle and the prince when they came out.  Audrey was the first little girl to greet Belle and get her picture with her.  We were super excited about that!

I did take some pictures of our fun night, but they are on my phone.  And I still don't have a way to get pictures off of my phone, so I can't post them quite yet.

Daniel's parents are coming with our nephews next weekend to see Beauty and the Beast as well, so Audrey is going to get to go a second time.  Obviously, she is excited about this!

August 10: I'm Back!

I'm going to try to get back into the daily blogging habit.   I have been a slacker this summer, but now I have no more excuses for not blogging.

My camera is working!  It sat in the rice for three and a half days, and when I took it out, it worked!  I have read that the camera can begin working again, but may later stop working if there is any residual moisture inside.  I am keeping my fingers crossed that it will not happen that way with my camera.

Our crazy summer schedule is over!  Summer Fest was the last big event at the end of a busy summer.  Now we have a few weeks with barely anything going on, and I am so excited to relax for a while!

Summer Fest went pretty well, I think.  I really enjoyed the planning process for this event, which started way back in January.  Most things worked out just as we planned them, and that is always nice.  I wish we would have had a few more kids attend, but I think the kids that were there had a great time and hopefully learned something too!

As I said before, we decided to write our own VBS this year.  We took out some of the things we didn't like about traditional VBS, added in some ideas that we thought would make it more fun, and the end result was pretty good.  Since it is Olympic season (and I am in love with the Olympics), we went with an Olympic theme.  Here was our stage decor:
That cauldron is over eleven foot tall, made completely out of styrofoam (made by an extremely talented guy in our church), and it was pretty amazing.  On the first night, we had an opening ceremony, where our main character of the week, "Super Steve," ran into the auditorium and lit the cauldron.  It was not a real flame, but it was pretty realistic.
I was too busy to take many pictures, but here are a few from our week:

August 5: Big Block Bash

My camera is still sitting in the bag of rice.  I'm scared to take it out.

Today I found an old point and shoot camera in our closet.  The last time I used it was when Audrey was a newborn.  There are still a bunch of pictures on it, and it was fun to go back and look at my tiny baby Audrey.  Like this one...look at that tiny baby with the big pacifier!
For now, I'm going to use this camera until I figure out what is going on with my camera.  A junky camera is better than no camera, right?  I'm not so sure about that; I've been spoiled with my DSLR for too long.  It was a pain trying to take pictures tonight and having to wait like 3 seconds for the shutter to release!  Not to mention that the quality is horrible.

Tonight was Big Block Bash (or the Big Fashion Show, as Audrey kept calling it.  I have no idea why), the annual block party that our church hosts in the parking lot each year.  It is conveniently scheduled the night before VBS, so it also serves as a kickoff event for VBS week.

They had  six bounce houses tonight, and Audrey loved all of them.  This was actually her first time to go in a bounce house.  Last year she was too scared to even think about trying it.  She is so much braver now.  She got right in there with all the big kids.  She did all the bounce houses over and over again, with no tears and no fears...just fun!!

Here's one last picture of Audrey and her friend Anna, showing off their face (and arm) painting.  These two girls are super excited about starting preschool in the same class in just a few weeks!

August 4: About my Absence...

I have not given up on this blog, I promise.  I just haven't posted much this week for a couple of reasons.

One, it's just busy around here.  Summer Fest, the elementary VBS at our church, starts on Monday night.  And I'm kind of in charge of it.  We decided to write our own VBS this year instead of buying a canned program.  We are pretty excited about what we have put together, but it's also a lot of work.  That has been consuming most of my free time lately.

The other reason I haven't posted much the past couple of days has to do with this giant bag of rice currently sitting in my dining room.
Two days ago it rained.  It hadn't rained at all in two months, so we were all pretty excited about the rain.  Until about one hour after the rain stopped.  It was then that I realized I had left my camera outside in the torrential downpour.  I ran out to get it right away, but after sitting in the rain for an hour and then sitting wet another hour, it obviously didn't work.

Rumor has it that covering the camera with rice might help to dry out any moisture inside the camera and help it to start working again.  So my camera is buried inside this bag and will remain there for a few more days.  I have little hope for its recovery after being water soaked for that long, but it's worth a try.

I'm not sure what we are going to do if the camera is ruined.  I'm trying not to think about that right now!!

I'll be back with an update about VBS and the camera in a couple of days.  Hopefully I will have good news to share about both!

July 31: The Olympics!

I love the summer Olympics.  So much!  It's probably a good thing that they only come around once every four years because I spend way too much time watching all the events.  Swimming and gymnastics are my favorite events.  I also enjoy diving and track.  Plus, if I have enough free time, I will sit down and watch almost any event!

Unfortunately, I don't have a lot of free time right now, so I've only been able to record the prime time coverage and watch it late at night.  But it's still exciting.  I just have to be careful not to check any news source or social media during the afternoons and evenings so that nothing gets spoiled for me.  That is hard to do, and I have had several things spoiled for me this week.  It is a lot more fun to watch if you don't know who is going to win.

I have been encouraging Audrey to watch and love the Olympics too!  So far, she likes diving the most.  She has been acting out every single dive with the divers, like this:
Such talent!  Audrey has also learned how to do a somersault while watching Olympic coverage.  She calls it doing a flip.  I'm sensing a future Olympic gymnast here, don't you think?  =)

We were cheering for Team USA in the women's synchro springboard diving the other night.  The USA got a silver medal, and Audrey was so excited for them.  So I made her a silver medal of her own!
